History of Chessex – Key Milestones
The story begins in 1980 with Donald Reents' store Games of Berkeley. In 1981 the first product was created: the reusable Battlemat™ gaming mat. Chessex Manufacturing began producing dice in 1987 for the RPG and tabletop scene.
In 1998 Chessex and The Armory merged their distribution arms to form Alliance Game Distributors. Chessex focused more on manufacturing and innovation of dice and accessories thereafter.
Special dice: From around 1993/1995 Chessex released the first Speckled® dice – including the iconic elemental sets Earth, Air, Fire and Water. These speckled designs became a trademark.
Further milestones: Gemini® dual-color dice, Nebula® with swirl effects, and the legendary Borealis® with the 'illegal glitter' (now collector's items) followed in the 2000s and beyond.
To this day, Chessex under Donald Reents stands for quality, variety and innovation in the gaming community.
